28.

Alexander happened inside my body. I made him in me, of us. Physically, literally. Turner came, I came, it was over, we lay there listening to each other breathe for a minute, and then we fell asleep. And sometime in the following minutes or hours our gametes met and combined, tra-la-la, and the cells started to divide.

By the time I was in Victoria two weeks later, for the memorial service for my paternal grandmother, our future Alexander was well on his way, growing, growing.

I peed on a stick when Sloane and I returned from the funeral, and two lines showed.

The radiologist said, “I’m really not sure why you’re here. It’s so small we can only see the implantation site. We can’t tell you anything at this point—”

Me: How many? As the older sister of twins, I didn’t want that for Sloane.

Him: “Well, honestly, it’s so early we can barely tell you anything except that you’re pregn—”

ARE THERE MORE THAN ONE, OR IS IT JUST ONE?

“Yes, it’s only one—”

K, fine, I’m good.

But by then, Something Had Happened, but not a something anyone could see on an ultrasound. That one bottom gene gone, a genetic gecko tail that can’t grow back, and the baby’s cells dividing and replicating that omission, on and on, and even now, right to this day.
